Adkins Elementary School: Natural Dye Workshop

May 21, 2018

Led by artist and visual arts technician Abby Sherrill, Denton ISD students in the Adkins Elementary Art Club took part in a workshop on natural dyeing at the College of Visual Arts and Design. First students used cloth to roll natural materials and plant matter into a bundle to steam. After the fabric was steamed, the cloth was unrolled to reveal color and imprints left from the plant matter. While the bundles were steaming, students experimented with traditional shibori processes of folding and clamping cloth to create resists in immersion dyeing. Students then used cloth to fold/tie/clamp and dye in natural indigo. Students left the workshop with their finished pieces of dyed fabric.
