The College of Visual Arts & Design and the Jo Ann (Jody) & Dr. Charles O. Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts & Design at the University of North Texas sponsored two awards to honor alumni participating in the 2017 Texas Art Education Association Conference. Each year, CVAD graduates present workshops, demonstrations, and scholarly research that embody the best of UNT’s contribution to art teaching in Texas. Applications were vetted by a group of six College of Visual Arts and Design faculty and staff. The award was created to acknowledge the significant contributions CVAD alumni make to the field of art education—regionally, nationally, and abroad.

Recipients of the award received a cash prize of $500 per recipient and a certificate of achievement. Recipients were also invited to present their work to current CVAD students in the spring of 2018.

Design Fits All Students was based on research conducted during the National Art Education Association’s 2017 Summer Studio for Design Thinking. The presentation explored rationales for the relevance of design thinking in art education as well as current developments in design education such as the relationship between game-based learning and sketch noting to the design process. The presentation also included collaborative activities enabling participation in the design process within the context of real-world scenarios and provided suggested actions to apply design-based concepts into the art classroom. UNT Alumni Keri Reynolds is a secondary art educator and Department Chair at Elsik High School in Houston, Texas.
